WHAT IS BEVELED GLASS?

Beveled glass is a piece of glass or mirror that has a consistent tapered edge cut all around its border. The interior area of the glass remains the same thickness while the tapered edges create a frame-like appearance. The edges can be left unpolished or they can be polished to give the piece a smooth look. Bevels can also create a prism effect on glass. They can capture sunlight and produce a spectrum of different colors that would normally not appear on float glass. Stained glass windows or pieces with patterns are typically made of beveled glass.

WHAT IS BEVELED GLASS USED FOR?

This type of glass has a variety of different applications. These include tabletops, decorative pieces, vanity mirrors, suncatchers, panels, architectural pieces, cabinet doors, ornaments, and framing. Beveled glass is a great option for a room's focal point. Many homeowners or business owners will have pieces made for a dining room or lobby wall. Single rectangular mirrors in a master bath are also commonly replaced with two beveled mirrors for a more elegant look. Other common uses of beveled glass include tabletop pieces for dining tables or smaller items like nightstands.

HOW IS BEVELED GLASS MADE?

Originally, beveled glass was handmade with the use of a roughing wheel, sand, water, and polishing stones. It was an extremely labor-intensive process and required a skillful glazier. The glass would be held against a roughing wheel to gradually taper the edges. It would then be polished and buffed. The quality of the stones used was extremely important in the process. If they did not meet the correct specifications, the glass would end up being scratched and the glazier would have to start over.

Today, the process is automated with the use of machines and they are able to produce more and much quicker. The manufacturing of beveled glass begins with a piece of float glass that typically ranges between a 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. The glass used can be textured or clear. Unlike the handmade crafting process, today manufacturers use plastic-based metal deburring wheels. These wheels are more efficient and create extremely smooth surfaces.
